introducing the undulate suite

The Undulate Suite

What’s New, What’s Next

The Undulate Suite made waves at it’s premiere on Thursday night at “What’s New, What’s Next” at the New York Design Center.

Distinctively Designed

Like the gentle rippling of water on the surface of a calm pond, or the draping of fine fabric, the beautifully designed forms of this contemporary collection seem alive with movement. The Undulate Suite features silhouettes that are at once organic and yet strikingly modern. Flowing, graceful curves are held in check by clearly defined outlines, creating a harmonious balance. Toying with traditional notions of what hardware can be, the rolling wave motif that characterizes this new collection is a visual and tactile delight.

The Undulate Suite is comprised of a Door Knob, Lever, Rosette, Escutcheon Plate, Thumb Turn, Door Pull, Cabinet Pull, and Cabinet Knob. Handcrafted in our foundry and atelier, each piece carries the SA Baxter mark, our master artisans’ signature ensuring that it has not only been made from the finest materials, but that it meets the highest standards of design. The dynamic new collection is now available for purchase.

3D Printing Metal in Space?

To continue our Space-related metal theme: Announced earlier this Summer – NASA is planning on using 3D printing technology – get this – in space.  The intent is to place a special 3D Printer on-board the International Space Station.  This would allow Astronauts to replace the Space Station’s worn, broken, or lost parts, and perhaps even develop new pieces – for needs as they arise.  3D CAD data, developed here on earth, can then be transmitted to the Space Station’s 3D printer for fabrication.  From what we can glean, the printer will be producing plastic pieces when flown to the ISS next Summer.  We are guessing it will only be a short amount of time before metal parts are being printed off-world.

0FD1859

How in the world does this relate to SA Baxter?  We welcome when Designers and Architects email us their 3D CAD models of door knobs, levers, and pulls, from the other side of the country, even half way around the world, for use in their bespoke projects.  Our in-house 3D printer and digital fabrication technologies, allow us to quickly and accurately produce the most gorgeous custom hardware in the world, perhaps even otherworldly hardware…all here at our Hudson Valley Foundry and Atelier.  Who do we talk to about having our hardware grace the International Space Station?

Coming Soon to the New York Design Center…12th Floor Door Hardware!

For the past several weeks SA Baxter has been working hand in hand with fellow NYDC 12th floor showrooms to furnish their doors with SA Baxter hardware. Each showroom has decided on a specific door pull they feel best compliments their aesthetic. Each has also selected one of our select finishes to complete the project. Are you ready to see what has been chosen?!

Profiles: www.profilesny.com

Profiles selected our Modern Ball Suite, which is a stunning take on a traditional form. The Bauhaus inspiration makes a bold statement in any room, and in the Dark Antique Bronze finish selected (Polished Nickel shown below), the door pull compliments all of the intricate details and antiques Profiles displays. Profiles provides the finest in custom upholstery and furnishings-both in wood and metal. They include antiques from Sweden to the Far East in their collection, while their workrooms in Europe and the United States specialize in craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Denis Miller Associateswww.dennismiller.com

Dennis Miller is a manufacturer and distributor of fine contemporary furniture, lighting and carpets. Dedicated to providing trend-setting designs created by the best of today’s designers as well as classic twentieth century designs, they selected the door pull from our Rustic Bump Suite. The high Polished Nickel finish provides an interesting twist for contemporary homes. Dennis Miller fell in love with the profile of the door pull – important, as their floor to ceiling glass doors remain open daily. The high polished shine mixed with the matte patina in the background creates desirable texture and a multi-dimensional look, which marries Dennis Miller’s trendy and classic aesthetic.

Stephanie Odegard Collections: www.stephanieodegard.com

The selection of our Spiral Themed Suite, which mixes clean lines and artful patterns, complements the detailed products displayed at Stephanie Odegard. A Burnished Brass finish completes the look, adding subtly to details, allowing the craftsman ship of Stephanie Odegard designs to shine. “Seeking to preserve rare and artistic traditions from around the world, Stephanie Odegard has developed a collection of hand-made rugs, furniture, lighting, decorative accessories and architectural elements for remarkable interiors. Committed to ensuring the longevity of these industries while maintaining respect for cultural expression and promoting environmental and social responsibility, Stephanie has spent years forging relationships with skilled artisans with the intent of exploring modern designs using traditional disciplines”. Stunning Silversmithing…The Works of Hamish Dobbie

The young Metal Artist and Jewelry Designer, Hamish Dobbie, has certainly made a splash in the world of metal sculpture.

3D-Printed-Spoons1

We are enamored with the aesthetic of this collection, and impressed with the use of 3D CAD and 3D printing technologies.  The combination of digital fabrication and delicate hand-chasing, is something we can most definitely relate to.

The intersection of 3D CAD modeling tools and traditional sculpture mediums has allowed artists to literally warp and replicate forms – which are typically straight and prismatic.  Here’s an excellent example, titled Fingals’ Goblet:

We Agree…An American Manufacturing Renaissance

It goes without saying that we at SA Baxter are unequivocally proud of our American-based manufacturing heritage.  We are also proud to be part of a new American Manufacturing Resurgence.  A number of Articles and Analysts have cited the potential shift in ‘Made in the USA’ advantages: abundant fuel sources, improvements in productivity, and challenges with outsourcing issues such as rising shipping costs and increasing Chinese wages.

(Scroll down further for links to related articles.)

SA Baxter was founded as an American based manufacturer, on the principles of superior craftsmanship, and maximization of green sustainable practices – which made New York’s Hudson Valley the natural choice for our Foundry and Atelier.

Another facet of this new fabrication enthusiasm: We’re also excited to see so many gutsy Innovators in the US, taking advantage of access to digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and laser-cutting.  The rise of crowd-sourced funding such as Kickstarter is fueling even more USA-based ‘get it done’ fervor.  Things are really starting to get interesting…
